PRESS RELEASE
RE: 13th Tarragona, Spain Fireworks Contest
BY: Jordi Bertrán Luengo, Event Coordinator
DATE: June 11, 2002
This information is about the communication design for the 13th International City of Tarragona Fireworks Contest, and also about the popular vote, using newspaper ballot voting, internet on-line voting, and telephone SMS message voting.
The communication design for the 2002 Competition is based on a sentence from the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí about the light on Miracle Beach, the firework firing area:
"I often need to see the sea. The sea is the unique thing that summarizes the three dimensions. The ideal thing would be to see all this at Miracle Beach in Tarragona, where light and colors have other images".
In 2002, Catalonia and all of Spain are celebrating that Antoni Gaudí was born 150 years ago. Tarragona has wanted to recreate the forms from Gaudí to design the communication and the image for the 13th International Fireworks Contest. The design uses the materials that Gaudí used to build buildings, but will now be used to draw the fireworks over the sea; the water, the waves and the beach.
Gaudí and the first fireworks competition we know in Spain -Tarragona 1901- lived together, so it has been a good idea to commemorate him and his style on our fireworks contest poster and program.
Additionally, Tarragonas local tv - Més TV - is going to record three of the competition displays: Skylight, Zaragozana and Nanna. They are going to play them afterwards or the next day and help us to give more information about the popular jury voting.

Tarragona, Spain Fireworks Contest Poster |
(My 2002 information will be ready to view here, on July 11.)
The 12th annual Tarragona, Spain International Fireworks Contest was held July 2-7, 2001. I was invited to be a judge of that competition, which was a very great honor for me. Judging that contest meant I would miss the July 4th fireworks here in the United States, but I could not miss out on the fun of going to Spain for the first time. During my stay in Tarragona I was treated to many beautiful sights and fun activities, as well as six nights of competition firework displays. A jury of fireworks experts, city officials, media personnel and others rated each display in more than a dozen specific categories. These two pages are presented to you by an American who has fallen in love with the people and splendor of Tarragona.
The jury of the 2001 competition awarded first place to LA ROSA LORENZO, second place to FOTI INTERNATIONAL FIREWORKS and third place to PIROTECNIA ANTONIO CABALLER.

The fireworks are fired from Miracle Point (Punta del Miracle), seen near the top of this photo. Miracle Beach held thousands of spectators each night. The remains of an ancient Roman amphitheater can be seen at the bottom of the photograph. This was the beautiful sight I saw out my hotel room window. |

I visited the firing area and took photos during some of the competition
setups.

Sand bags were used to stabilize the mortars. Although some of the competitors used plastic bags in case of rain, every night of the competition had beautiful weather. |

Several companies fired girandolas, a flying wheel firework that spins as it flies high into the air. |

After the final competition display, the judges ate a late supper
together and verified the votes to determine the winners. Everyone
liked the fireworks neckties I wore, they were even mentioned in the
newspaper.

My main hosts and contacts during the trip to Spain were Jordi Bertrán Luengo, organizer of the competition, and Núria Casas Marti, an excellent translator. Jordi planned several day trips for me which were all very special. During several radio and newspaper interviews, Núria made sure my information was translated correctly into the local language, Catalàn. These fine people, and many others, went out of their way to make sure I had a wonderful visit to Spain. |
